You know you’ve done goofed when you’d get a better response by not doing anything at all. Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, the PlayStation 5 re-release of 2018’s open world smash hit, has been handled atrociously by Sony – and it’s emblematic of a disastrous week for the Japanese giant, that’s seen it scramble from one communication mishap to another.
Exactly what’s going on behind-the-scenes is unclear, but the platform holder really hasn’t been reading the room lately. But first, let’s focus on the positives: Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered genuinely sounds like a massive upgrade, rather than a mere resolution bump. The game will offer a 60 frames-per-second option, incorporate new character models, facial animations, and much more. It’s, as the name suggests, a remaster.
The problem is that you’ll need to pay for it, and with a growing list of free PS4 to PS5 upgrades, the optics are bad – even if Insomniac Games is investing significant effort here. To be fair, it’s not full-price – it’s available for $69.99 alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, meaning that it costs about $20 overall. If you purchase the spin-off for the PlayStation 4, you’ll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version of the same game for free – and you’ll have an option to buy Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered from within its menu. However, the re-release will not be available standalone.
The real kicker here is that if you already own Marvel’s Spider-Man on the PS4, then you’ll get nothing. To be clear: you will be able to play the original game on the PS5 via backwards compatibility, and there may be some improvements to framerate and resolution – but you won’t benefit from the upgraded character models and introduction of raytracing. Those features are reserved for the remaster.
Confused? You’re not alone. It’s a messy situation, and as we alluded to earlier in the article, it’s the kind of scenario where Sony would have received a better reception had it done nothing at all. The problem is that it doesn’t appear to be in touch with the industry at large any more – it’s obvious that with so many free PS4 to PS5 upgrades already announced, this wouldn’t sit well with some fans, even if the situations aren’t the same. Heck, the Japanese giant itself is supporting this movement with titles like Horizon Forbidden West and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.
Of course, the platform holder would argue that it’s investing significant effort and resources to remaster the experience here. That’s a fair counter-argument, and judging by what Insomniac Games has said about the upgrade, it does sound like a different game. But how are we meant to visualise the improvements without a single screenshot or trailer? Some of the backlash could have been quelled by a side-by-side comparison video showing exactly what’s been done.
It’s yet another bizarre blunder from a company who’s received a bloody nose over the past week. Sloppy explanations and some strange decisions have left it looking like a company out-of-touch. And all this does is raise questions about The Last of Us: Part II and Ghost of Tsushima: will they receive paid remasters, too? Sony’s going to have to seriously improve its comms if it thinks it can pull that kind of stunt in this climate, because this Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered debacle is not sitting well with fans.
How are you feeling about Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered? Are you happy to pay extra for the upgrades being touted? Do you think Sony’s gone about this the wrong way? Speak your mind in the comments section below.

Going to be hilarious when they announce The Last of Us 2 Remastered on Saturday.
Something tells me this is the result of Jim Ryan's Leadership... Really miss Andrew House
@get2sammyb if they said they added an alternative ending exclusive to PS5 i think people would eat it up lol
@get2sammyb This is 100% gonna happen. And it will bring Factions 2.0
@Sanquine I know it's become vogue to transform Jim Ryan into this crazy demon-like figure who's destroying everything he touches, but this is a tired narrative for me.
Jim Ryan was heavily involved with the PS4 launch as well, after all.
I think what we're seeing here is the result of Sony attempting to globalise its operations during a pandemic. It doesn't feel as nimble as it used to be from a communication perspective, which they're going to have to fix fast.
@Sanquine How can you pinpoint this on Jim Ryan entirely? There are more people than just him helping to run PlayStation.
Doesn’t seem so bad to me, why would buying one game entitle you to a remaster, especially if you can still play the game you originally bought on new consoles?
No, it shows they are not good at getting messages out. Although online rags also play a part.
All they need to say is that all PS4 games that are also released by them on PS5 get a free upgrade. Which is the truth.
This way people will understand that Spider-Man Remastered doesn’t get an upgrade because Spider-Man Remastered is not on PS4. It can’t run on PS4. It was made to utilise the power and features of PS5.
It is not in the least bit confusing. People have always had to pay for Remasters.
Artificially generated “controversy” for clicks.
Still getting a ps5 but the old arrogant Sony of the ps3 is showing its ugly head
@Athrum I'm part of the problem, but I would buy it. 😬
@get2sammyb I'd happily pay for that, but then again I work and don't expect everything handed to me on a plate.
Another "confusopoly" practice meant to swindle people out of their money. Also, i kinda disagree on the "counter-argument" you provided for SONY. So all they have to do is say "we worked really hard" and we're supposed to blindly accept that? If they actually showed in detail through an interview or a video the makings of the remaster then maybe i can understand the point, but having absolutely no proof besides their word, when they've lied on stuff in the past on such topics (like how hard cross play actually is for example, when they claimed "it's not like you flip a switch" and then it actualy seemed like that was almost exactly like what they did) is idiotic to me.
@suikoden There's room for nuance in discussions like this. While this situation certainly isn't good, it's no where near as bad as the PS3 debacle. Let's try to keep some degree perspective before we all lose our minds.
It wouldn’t be too bad but Sony have showed absolutely nothing of what buying the ‘upgrade’ gets you. I’m not against paying for some upgrade as long as the leg work and improvements justify the cost, but I need to see what those improvements are first.
I think licencing may be a factor in this upgrade being payable while other Sony upgrades are free. Sony may have to pay Marvel again if it is classed as a new release?
I don't mind paying an extra £20 on a remaster which I know will be high quality.
I do not mind to pay some extra cash for these huge improvements. I love Spider-Man games and movies so for me it is ok.
@RayNick To be fair, I literally made that point in the article. We don't disagree here: "But how are we meant to visualise the improvements without a single screenshot or trailer? Some of the backlash could have been quelled by a side-by-side comparison video showing exactly what’s been done."
I don't think Sony owes a free remaster for this game, it will be over two years old when PS5 launches. I understand that some games that are even older than this are getting free upgrades, but a full remaster with all Sony and Insomniac is packing in (reportedly) shouldn't be expected to be free.
@Darylb88 I thought about that, but Marvel's Avengers is doing a free upgrade. Although I guess you could argue that's been designed as a service game, as opposed to a one-and-done type title like Spider-Man is.
At this point I wouldn't even hope at least from PlayStation Studios that has free upgrades from PS4 to PS5 enhancements. It would be funny if they'll announce both The Last of Us Part II and Ghost of Tsushima Remasters that we have to pay again. Sony has great games but has garbage messaging meanwhile Microsoft still has to prove their games but will pay off in the long run especially how Game Pass is even growing and its value. Oh I forgot to mention how Sony charges us to pay $70 for upcoming games.
I believe there's technical challenges preventing Insomniac and Sony from enabling Spider-Man PS4 saves to carry over. it's pretty much The Last Of Us Remastered situation. Spider-Man PS4 remaster for PS5 is different game than Spider-Man PS4 2018 clearly two different games but that's almost impossible to explain to vast majority of the people who are upset and have the right to.
to me I replayed it few months ago. so not going to get it again.
"Does sound lile a different game"
There was the defense line I was expecting.
Absolutely laughable on Sony's part and they deserve the ridicule. Tone deaf. Really shows how they view you as a consumer.
Nothing more to say.
I played through spiderman twice and all the DLC and got the platinum so have no desire to play again. I expect they'll want to do something similar with TLOU2 and GOT bolting on something extra and hence why i haven't bought any new game this year.
I don't think it's an ideal situation but also not a huge problem for me. The moment this was announced, I sold my copy of Spiderman for PS4 and got $20.
That pays to upgrade my version of Miles Morales to the Ultimate Edition 🤷♂️
Would I like to see it as a few upgrade? Yes. But it would create a different kind of mess. Would you have to keep the PS4 disc inside the PS5?
@get2sammyb Yeah maybe they are using the remaster $/£20 to offset the free upgrade cost of MM. I feel like the licence situation may have made it more complicated for Sony.
@RayNick
This is what reviews are for. Insomniac have said they added ray tracing, new animations, redid facial and hair animations and character models, used the ps5 to increase frame rate and resolution, added new costumes / powers but as ever, wait for the reviews for proof. I’ve enough experience with their games to trust them.
@get2sammyb I wasn't implying you didn't mention that, but seeing as remastering a 2 year old game is already a bad move, ESPECIALLY when BC is supposedly a selling factor, they should provide a more in-depth explanation for the development proccess rather than a video explain how much "better" it runs on PS5. I want a video on the dev proccess and cost, not just a performance one.
@get2sammyb there is nothing confusing about this. It is a bonus addition. Nobody is entitled to a free remaster of every game they've ever bought on ps4. People should be thankful Insomniac even bothered to put the work in and bring us it this early. At 20 extra for a fully remastered game on top of a brand new adventure, which i was buying anyway, is a steal.
@RayNick Again, I agree with you!
@JapaneseSonic Remedy is a bit of a different case, because they outright lied and tried to make it seem like there's some phantom technical problem keeping them from giving everybody the upgrade. Here, though, I'd agree with you.
$20 for the remaster isn't bad considering that the original just came out a couple years ago. In some ways I can see why people are upset, but is it really worth getting worked up over such a comparitively small amount? It'd be one thing if they were trying to hawk this standalone for the new $70 base rate, but I find $20 to sound reasonable for what's being offered here.
@Danloaded It would take a lot more then a different ending to take my money, an alternative first two hours would be a start
@get2sammyb Their lack of communication still doesn't make sense in why they want to sell us their games again in a climate where free upgrades are a thing.
@AdamNovice You didn't like it? I think it's a fantastic game!
Im a big PlayStation fan but they have annoyed or pissed me off time after time this year and really make me miss prior management. Even though these may be the same, I kind of look at them differently, I freaking hate the silence, lack of communication and the lack of fan interaction. Prior management SOMEWHAT seemed like gamers that enjoyed what they did while now, these leaders feel like traditional corporate suits.
@SwitchVogel "lied and tried to make it seem like there's some phantom technical problem"
No, they didn't. People (including pushsquare staff) jumped to conclusions and then attacked them for lying based on the baseless conclusions they drew and not on what they actually said.
This is kind of like complaining that you should be given a free blu-ray because you own a film on DVD.
Yeah, it would be nice if they did it for free, but you know, you don't actually have to buy it. Or just play the PS4 version you have.
A select few companies are doing it free, and they should be applauded, but equally you shouldn't denigrate the ones who choose to charge.
I don't play online, so doesn't matter to me, but upcoming freebies from Sony include Ghost of Tsushima Online, and GTA Online PS5 version. So it's not like they never offer free upgrades.
The only real issue is that they're not offering it as a standalone purchase as well. Just like COD 4 remastered. I think it's fine to charge 20 bucks for a remaster of a two year old game that you can find for around the same price or even cheaper for PS4.
I don’t see what the problem is myself 🤷♂️
I mean this is a proper remaster and different from just a resolution and framerate bump you might get using PS5 backward compatibility.
From Insomniac:
“Many art assets have been updated to take advantage of the PS5 console’s horsepower. Better-looking characters w/ improved skin, eyes, hair, and facial animation. Ray-traced reflections and ambient shadows, improved lighting, more pedestrians and vehicles stretching into distance. Optional performance mode for a targeted 60fps frame rate. Near-instant loading, 3D audio, DualSense controller’s haptic feedback. Three suits, new photo mode features, and even new trophies“
That seems like quite a bit of effort above and beyond some standard backward compatibility mode. I guess whether or not it’s worth $20 will be up to the consumer at the end of the day.
I'm okay with 2 years ago, no mtx remaster of high quality single player sony games (or 5 years bloodborne RT remaster by bluepoint ). I'm not okay with this year games paid remaster though, I hope sony isn't making paid ghost of tsushima remaster
Also new trophy is nice, I'll try to get it on the first time unlike the last time (I spend too much taskmaster coins on new suits so I have to start a new game+ to get the plat).
And yeah, sony communication is just really bad, they're not saying anythings until it affect their stock price (like the bloomberg false report), it's a really cold, corporate communication, which is a stark contrast with early ps4 days.
@get2sammyb As a game in terms of presentation it's amazing but as soon as what happens in the first hours happens just kills the entire thing. It takes away what makes TLOU what it is while giving us a bunch of characters who aren't given any depth and/or completely irredeemable as people. For me TLOU was about hope and companionship, the moment that's took away your left with a game that's beyond bleak and cruel.
Pretty sure all they did was pop the older code into the upgraded engine which already had the newer models, higher resolution, etc. I feel like they are projecting that it took more effort than it actually did. And when lots of other companies are offering essentially the same thing for free it looks even worse.
The chances of anyone buying the game twice a minimal and not providing an upgrade path leads to the impression that when you read the small print Sony is the worst deal than Microsoft. As the platform holder you would think it will be in Sony‘s best interest to make people want to upgrade from the PS4 to PS5 and having their content improve with the transition would be a good way to persuade people.
It certainly seems like a case of counting the pennies without looking at the bigger picture.
@AdamNovice ND should make tlou 2 (not tlou part 2) where it's revealed tlou part 2 is just ellie bad dream and the game start by joel waking her up lol.
Man to think I spend $60 for digital version of this game..
@get2sammyb
Side by side comparison probably wasn’t even considered. The Spider-Man remaster is just a cheap bundle in to get people to buy MM when they may not have had a PS4 this gen. it’s a bonus. The game wasn’t even advertised in the run up to release of the PS5. It’s a side event.
I’m sure if they would have anticipated people being foolish enough to think that a Remaster of a years old game would be free (instead of just $20) then they would have explained the differences in more detail, and I’m sure that is now incoming after a mass of articles like this.
I'm a firm believer that customers more than pay for 'free' support. We are constantly told about how the gaming industry is growing, and how X game made X amount of millions, and how CEOs are getting X millions on bonuses.
Between PS raking in cash, and Spider-man selling millions of copies, Sony could very easily afford to give away this upgrade for current owners.
I'm also a firm believer in MS' approach to cross gen, cross play, and cross buy games. It's one of the few perks that allows gamers to just get the game they want, on the platform they have available and not worry about needing to buy it on another system.
Sure, we're not entitled to it, and we're not forced to buy this stuff, but as we're all customers and gamers, we should fight for things that benefit us.
The amount of entitlement from the majority of you in this thread is overwhelming.
It's ridiculous that Sony should even be expected to clarify it.
Not sure why anyone would expect a PS5 version of Spider-Man to be completely free. I don't, and I only bought it in a sale in November 2019.
The free upgrades are for late-generation games, in the months prior to the new consoles. For TLOU2 and GoT I could understand if they did it, but wouldn't be shocked, surprised, or angry if they didn't.
For a two-year-old game? Nah, that's reaching, and smacks of the "gamer entitlement" we're seeing more and more of in recent times.
Lighten up folks, we're on the cusp of a new console generation and a lot of you are super pessimistic.
@WizzNL Forza Horizon 4, Gears 5, Witcher 3... that's 3 examples of games outside the launch window getting free upgrades. I'm sure there's more I missed.
@Synthatron_Prime
I would list all the games not getting free upgrades, but I’m getting on in years and don’t have that kind of time to waste.
If companies want to give away free stuff for PR reasons then jolly good, if they need paying for their work that’s understandable.
No one is ENTITLED to a free upgrade - period. If a game is truly being remastered for next-gen...you pay for it. It is really is simple. Gamers wanting every upgrade for free is selfish and ridiculous. If they start throwing up their hands and demanding such things, developers will just not do PS5 upgrades - something they are not required to do anyway. Also, I remember paying for Last of Us Remastered.
I think part of the problem here is that people expect the platform owner, who is trying to convince them to get the new console, to be the most generous dev, not someone like CDPR. The other issue is that 2 year old games don't really need stand alone remasters. They need a bit of a polish for the new tech akin to upping the graphics settings on a PC release. If Spider-Man has received so much effort that it must be a retail release, then I would suggest they would have been better off spending those resources on adding more content to Miles Morales at this point.
@thefourfoldroot I was responding to the person's statement saying it was only launch window games getting the upgrade. Nothing more. Companies can do what they want. They just need to not pretend like it's more than it is with this remaster. It's not a full on remake like Demon's Souls.
@Synthatron_Prime
No, it’s not, which is why it’s $20 and not $70 like Demons souls.
@jmac1686 I'd agree with you, you never got enhancements from PS1 to PS2. The problem is that Sony and Microsoft have set the president that games will get free upgrades. Having to pay for this game is the exception of the rule which is why people are annoyed.
@thefourfoldroot I know. But it's also essentially a framerate and resolution bump which Xbox has been doing for free for years, along with a few other companies. And its not just 20 dollars because you can't buy it separately. Again, whatever. But they need to be honest with this convoluted mess.
@WizzNL They haven't clarified the updates for those games besides higher resolution and framerates, no. But Spiderman isn't getting anything more than that. New facial models? Yay? Those were probably already in the Miles part of the game. And running the ps4 version on your ps5 only gives you more stability. No other improvements.
Spider-Man is a great game! Done 2 play through a and loved it both times. If they are giving it a proper remaster job then it’s worth the £20 or so. Seems silly that they are just locking it in with Miles Morales though, maybe they should offer like an upgrade system where if you already have the game you can pay for the upgrades they’ve put in or if not you get the standard backwards compatibility free... Have to say I’m a bit gutted I’ll be missing out on some next gen Spider-Man just hoping from a selfish point of view hoping Miles Morales isn’t missing big features for the PS4 version as I’m going with a series S for a year or 2 whilst Sony hopefully gives more incentive for PS5 owners and makes a bit more effort.
Why should it be free? Work has been done to a two year old game and people need to be paid to perform this work. When you buy the 2018 Ford Fiesta you can’t go moaning at the Ford dealership when they won’t upgrade you to the 2020 model for free.
@AdamNovice honestly it was the ending that left the bad taste for me. I know in most games having a select your ending choice isnt usually a good thing but i would have appreciated one this time. Gameplay was great tho. They may add the multiplayer for the remaster tho
Fact you can’t find a PS5 anywhere shows most do not care. They get BC, can play 2 year old SM whenever they want.
Bring on Miles Morales!
Does no one remember TLoU? The Last of Is Remastered wasnt a free upgrade so why should this be? It's a 2yr old game its jot like it just came out.
Not Sony’s finest hour. They will no doubt do this with other titles. It’s just confusing messaging when some games have free upgrades and then others don’t. Sony’s messaging in general has been appalling all through this lead up. I say that as a Sony fan
I guess the lesson from all this is definitely DO NOT buy games at launch or pre-order them. Wait 2-3 years when a better version of comes out.
Sony has always loved its ‘remastered’ copies of existing games and that’s a fact, look at The Last Of Us 1... I don’t expect the PS5 gen to be any different, meanwhile Xbox will be offering free upgrades to previous games left right and centre..
@rjc-32 it shouldn’t necessarily be a given but Sony could garner a lot of good will very quickly and easily by just absorbing the remaster costs. It’s kinda the right thing to do if they want people to migrate over to a new platform smoothly and it rewards already paying customers.
They could even still sell it to new users.
What the PlayStation community need to do is collectivley come together and demand (within reason) better from Sony, it's no good shouting into void on sites they won't be watching.
@thefourfoldroot
Exactly...a non-issue.
On the surface it is the kind of thing that publishers do all the time and arguably no one is left behind. You can play Spiderman on PS5 happily. This is a sexier edition.
The issue is really is that lots of other companies are offering it for free to entice people to buy their games in the knowledge it will work on it. So once they offer it, you look less consumer friendly.
@Synthatron_Prime
Ah, OK, I see your massive mistake now and so understand where your opinion has come from. I was having real trouble trying to follow your logic until now!
You are under the misconception that this remaster is just “a framerate and resolution bump”! Maybe you have it confused with the boost mode when playing the old PS4 game on the PS5. That is the one that just has those automatic advances. Don’t worry, that is indeed free. Backwards compatibility is not something you have to pay for, just put the disc in and it will work in Boost Mode.
No, the game we are all talking about in this thread is Spider-Man Remastered exclusive to PS5. It has numerous new animations and features, like ray tracing, more density, haptic feedback etc that are not even possible on the PS4 version, so clearly are new. Luckily it was developed in conjunction with MM so you only have to pay $20 for it as opposed to the full price Remasters are usually sold at.
Hope that clears things up!
@thefourfoldroot LOL
Ray traced spandex don't come for free.
I dont think anyone is expecting Monster Hunter World or Dragonball FighterZ to get Remastered and a free upgrade if you own the game right? Those games came out the same year as Spiderman.
At this point they need a PR guru more than anything else.
MicroSoft have been smashing them at PR since the cross-platform debate started.
It's hard to get anything right when everyone is picking apart everything you say, and then when you do get it wrong it sounds like a disaster.
@AdamNovice Exactly that.
@JapaneseSonic I mean you're right. I just wish you could pay for it separately, or pay for the upgrade from your spiderman ps4 disc (not miles morales) instead of having to buy a whole new game and pay an extra 20 dollars just to get the old game.
@Arnna
I very much doubt they could sell it to new ps5 users in that situation when said users could just pick up a second hand PS4 non-remastered old copy for next to nothing and get the free upgrade.
Still time to cancel those PS5 pre-orders and look for a xbox
"The problem is that you’ll need to pay for it"...
Why is that a problem? okok might be out of context, but I am still not happy about the argument.
is everything supposed to be free of charge? this model won't last long and we can kiss our hobby goodbye. I read a post of someone here on this site, who wrote about devaluation with specific mention of gamepass.
I am always willing to spend my hard earned cash for quality stuff. like a spiderman remaster
You should be able to upgrade from Spider-Man not Miles Morales. Sony's biggest problem has been communication and so many mixed messages from separate console generations to how backwards compatibility and even upgrades are handled.
Now I have no issues with any developer charging for an upgrade if significant work has gone into as seems to be the case here, but they have to let existing owners upgrade not lock it behind the Miles Morales Ultimate Edition as is happening.
As for myself well I've just preordered the Ultimate Edition for PS5 anyway, its not that much more and I'm curious to see what they've done, in an odd way it will be fun to swap between the 2 versions on PS5 to see the difference
Umm ok, I’m not seeing why you’re so angry...
Not sure why people are pretending to be outraged by this. It's a GTA V type of next-gen upgrade for fifteen quid, which is excellent value. The PS4 version will still be playable on the PS5.
I've defended the paid upgrade for Spider-Man on here before, and it still makes sense - it doesn't have to be free to PS4 owners. The bizarre part is walling off the upgrade behind Miles Morales. I don't get why the remaster isn't available separately, nor available as a $20 upgrade for owners of the PS4 game?
I bought Mafia on ps2 when it launched, I demand a free copy of the new remake
@thefourfoldroot You make valid points and to be clear I intend on buying it. It's just the convoluted messaging, lack of easy upgrade, and not true price of 20 dollars (you have to buy Miles first) is all annoying compared to the ease of other offerings. Control is in the same boat but with even more holes in it.
@Darylb88 it's not even that, more like £15. Unclear why it's in dollars (or dollars only).
I was originally interested in grabbing the Remastered alongside MM, but now I'm not so sure. I think I'll skip the preorder and wait for Sony to decide how to navigate this. I have at least a little faith their Marketing team isn't dumb enough to tell customers to suck it up.
@Synthatron_Prime
Yes, it’s annoying you can’t buy it separately but, honestly, I think Sony (or maybe the gaming press!) have misjudged the demand to play it again. I think Sony just thought to bundle it because new people getting a PS5 may have been put off getting MM without the main game and would feel bad buying the PS4 version after dropping so much money on a PS5. It’s not like we can say Sony have been hyping it, or even mentioning it.
And if it turns out they lied and it is just a simple up res then it will be scummy and I’d be right along with you. But I trust Insomniac more than most, especially with such a spotlight on a launch game.
I dont see the issue. Its a remake so they put some effort in it. The only thing that they should make available is the option to buy it as a standalone title. But its 2020 and the people that scream the loudest on the internet must be right....
@LiamCroft @get2sammyb,
Didn't I tell you guys that I disagree with how Sony is handling situations?
This is proof of what I meant!
Not just BC with previous gens (regardless of how they do it, perhaps use PSNow) but also with these reckless cashgrabs.
Again, this'll bite them in their asses sooner or later!
Sony is so comfy being the consoleleader for years now, and it shows! It's getting to a point where it's just plain arrogance.
Gamepass may not be the ideal direction forward for this industry but it's a really solid deal! This accompanied with Zenimax' acquisition, and the looming treat of more acquisitions, it does make Xbox a hefty contender going into next-gen.
Sony could've smashed Xbox easily. I'm keeping a healthy supply of popcorn ready for what's yet to come.
@thefourfoldroot you’re absolutely right, I didn’t think of that, lol.
I was OK with paying for remastered games between the PS/PS2/PS3 to PS4 because it wasn't possible to play those games on a PS4 and I thought a lot of those games needed extra polish to make them playable on a HD tv. I know for many PS4 games moving to a PS5 it's not as simple as moving a slider bar to upgrade the textures, AI, and other game improvements. If they want to spend the extra time and resources to add those improvements and they are significant enough then I could see them charging on a case by case basis. On paper it may make sense for them to charge but with companies like CD Projekt Red doing free upgrades for existing users it makes Sony look very cheap and consumer unfriendly. In the end you still can play all your PS4 games on the PS5 but anything above and beyond that we are at the publishers mercy. Sony needs to see how competitive Microsoft is this gen and adjust their plan before they solidify themselves as a company that nickels and dimes its customers.
Sony is out of touch is a stretch in my opinion. You can still play Spiderman on your PS5 and if your smart you can keep your ps4 and if your even smarter you can buy the Spiderman Miles Morales upgraded version and get both games for $69 dollars. At the end of the day because they didn't remake the game via hard copy has them out of touch is a stretch. Honestly It doesn't bother me at all. I have the game, platinum the game no reason to be upset because they are not bringing the game out again hard copy for the 5. We can't have everything we want when at the end of the day we get a spiderman game in the first place. So keep stretching it
Go to your car dealer and ask for a free upgrade to a facelift model with the new engine because you bought the old one. I don't know why people expect everything for free.
@JapaneseSonic I agree. The article is like an infusion of negativity on behalf of Push Square. That is how I feel about it.
@dychomir Because if other car manufacturers were offering free engine upgrades, then others would look bad for charging for them — even if the latter's doing more than an oil change.
By comparison, Gears 5 on Series X is getting a FREE Series S/X upgrade. This upgrade is NOT a simple boost to resolution and/or just raising the frame rate cap either.
The full list of improvements currently are:
And this was listed back in July.
I highlighted better textures as that is no more work than better character models. Game development would start with a high detail character model that is then used to create textures, 'simplified' character models of differing polygon counts etc - but those 'high' detail character models are STILL kept. High Res Textures are still kept too and, like character models, are the basis for creating various versions at different resolutions - you can see games where a certain distances, lower quality models/textures etc get swapped out for higher quality with the 'best' quality reserved for 'nearest' the camera. A big rock in the far distance may be simplified to a 2D image with a low res texture, as you get closer, it becomes a low polygon count 3D model with low res textures, as you get closer, it may have 2 or maybe even 3 other models - increasing in Polygon count and/or texture quality until you get close enough that they use the highest quality version for the game - but still not the 'highest' quality they built. Characters too use this so its not a 'massive' undertaking to replace textures/assets with higher quality versions.
The problem here is locking it behind a pay wall of a special edition of another game. Why not offer it with the spiderman season pass (as this version as all the dlc)? Surely all this does is generate good will from customers and revenue for sony, as margins on dlc are much better. Maybe you feel its entitled gamer to scream for it but it would have went someway to heading off the narrative that microsoft is the better value place to play. After all we are a tiny fraction of the marketplace who are committed to gaming as a hobby. If your casual and have suffered financially in 2020, chances are you are looking for whats the best consumer deal. Play your old games with an extra purchase of new content and we will make them look even better surely would appeal to that market.
@get2sammyb there's nothing for free. if they did that it means sales are bad (sub par product, relaunch, loss of market share etc )and have absorbed that in the future cost.
@captainsandman hmm Sony not a consumer friendly company is a long shot. They are by far one of the best when it comes to delivering games to its community. They are the best at it and continues to deliver over and over again. Now MS purchase of Bethesda was a shot in the chest but when are they creating their next big title ESVI or even a doom game or anything of that nature.... who knows could be a couple of more years and it still may come to our console.... maybe. At the end of Sony delivers and continues to deliver we have games to play with the new console on release so consumer friendly is exactly what Sony is.
@BAMozzy and that is great that they upgraded a last gen Game? What about this gen what are they generating that hasn't been played already.... nothing playing a old game all over again can be honestly boring. I have high expectation for Xbox don't get me wrong because it will push Sony but upgrading your old games because you don't have any real console release games to help sale is a smack in the face to the consumers lets be real. They already proved that with that terrible Halo debacle and now they purchased Bethesda which has a good and bad situation to it.
@JapaneseSonic Yeah exactly, IT'S TWO YEARS OLD
It still looks pretty freaking spectacular for a PS4 game. Last of Us at least made some degree of sense given it was released extremely late in the PS3 generation so they used the PS4 version to bring the game to people who already invested in that console due to its lack of backwards compatibility. Same with Persona 5 eventually coming to both PS3/4, but Spider-Man isn't just a two year old PS4 game, it's also already backwards compatible with the PS5 natively. This really didn't need to happen.
I have to admit I was disappointed when I first saw this on the box art of Spiderman: Miles Morales. This topic reminded me that I have always said any game made the last year of a consoles lifecycle should get a free upgrade to the next system. Clearly Spiderman came out much earlier than that.
Now that that's over with there is a second question. Do I really want to pay $20 and replay Spiderman to platinum again? Yes, No, or maybe. I just don't know at this point. I may have to buy it just to see If one can really travel across the whole city in 3 seconds!!!
@JohnKarnes lol that is all I can say about that
Oh and that 'list' from Gears 5 is the kind of list you would expect to see on a 'remaster' from a Developer - listing the upgrades you can expect from the 'original' release.
Some Remasters (God of War 3) did a LOT less - I know some went a lot further (Crash Bandicoot for example) but Spider-Man, Gears 5, Forza Horizon 4, Ori and the Will O' the Wisps, Sea of Thieves etc, these are just a few years old.
Xbox Studio's are still having to do 'work' to upgrade their games, optimise them for next generation etc and I know that they are not 'working' for free, that there is a cost involved on doing so - but the difference is that the cost is not being passed onto the customer who already purchased these games and it may well encourage more to buy it on next gen, more to buy the next gen console...
Xbox may not have too many 'new' first Party releases at launch - Gears Tactics maybe the only 'New' release - but they have a number of 'older' games that are 'essentially' remasters too that if you own, you don't need to buy again.
@naruball That's true, but they implied it by vaguely saying that there are "blockers" which keep them from being able to do it. Perhaps it's not an outright lie, but they're trying to spin it to seem like they want to give the upgrade to current owners but can't for reasons beyond their control. That glitch last week where they accidentally gave it to all current owners proved that they can in fact do it, they just won't. Nothing wrong with that decision, I'll add, but there is something wrong with being dishonest about it.
@JapaneseSonic the other thing is that those games will largely be resolution upgrades etc. My understanding is that Spiderman is different. It will be built to specifically make use of things like the tech in the dualsense. So the game isnt like the other titles announced to be getting free upgrades.
The problem has been Sony's communication which has been horrendous. They are trying to be too clever with their comms strategy. And its not working.
Rather than drop a vague statement to Kotaku. They should be previewing the game and explaining why the extra cost is needed.
I have preordered the ultimate edition of miles morales so i can get the remaster, but i can fully understand why people are annoyed. Sony HAVE to start communicating
I wonder if the remaster has its own trophy list.
@Th3solution given it's a different SKU it certainly will
@Skuggs23 It helps - if they are equivalent of remasters, a lot of work gone in to enhancing them and if you own the game, its free. Its better than selling you Spider-Man again remastered if you already own the game.
As far as I am aware, Gears Tactics is releasing on Console on launch (not my thing as I don't like Turn Based Tactical games) but its a Launch exclusive. Along with games like AC:Valhalla, Dirt 5, Bright Memory, Observer: System Redux, The Falconeer, Yakuza, Tetris Effect. As CNET puts it, More games than the PlayStation 5, but fewer exclusives....
I don't technically 'need' to buy any game at launch on Xbox to get the benefits of playing on that system as numerous games will be upgraded for free. When you buy a new console, you aren't going to buy 10 new games to play on it so some of your old games will be supplementing your gaming time. What are you going to play after beating Spider-Man: MM in 15hrs or so? Are you planning to buy a fair few games at launch to see you through or will you also be relying on playing the games you already own, games in your backlog you have yet to complete? Wouldn't it be better if those games came with a Free update that bumps up the visual quality, doubles the frame rates, loads much faster etc?? If CDPR and numerous other devs can upgrade 'older' games like the Witcher 3 for FREE, then why can't Sony too...
@KathyQ I've just seen this, ouch 😅
@theheadofabroom Thanks. I probably won’t play it again but a second potential platinum could be slightly enticing, although I still doubt I will double dip. Loved the game though, but for me it’s less about the $20, and more about the time investment in replaying something when my backlog is so huge.
A remaster is a new game. I expect to have to pay for new games. If a new game is free, that's generally because it's being released as marketing for something else.
Example 1: in the run up to Borderlands 3,a remaster of the original Borderlands was released. On Steam this was free to anyone who already owns the original Borderlands game. This is only true because people will pick up Borderlands again to play the remaster, remember how much fun it was, and then probably replay the other games while they wait for the pre-order of the new one.
Example 2: Mafia definitive editions/trilogy. Remasters of the last two games are free to owners of the original releases to build hype for the total remake of the first game, which is being charged for.
Example 3: Microsoft studios game upgrades. The small selection of these that are not just recompile of the original code with a settings tweak and the original (not downscaled) textures are being done to market GamesPass and the inevitable sequels.
All of these are great, but they're not something we're entitled to. They're a cheap marketing push for something else they hope will be profitable. That's a publisher decision where I'm happy either way.
Funny, last week I was called out as being overreacting for saying that Sony is out of touch, like back in it's PS3 days and today we get an article like this.
I’d think there’s a reason they don’t want to sell it standalone. Maybe they’re going to make it a PS+ free game early into the lifecycle and don’t want to sell it full price and get everyone upset?
@JapaneseSonic Very well said. Glad to see we aren't alone.
@BAMozzy I think people are being short sighted here. I know a lot of people skipped the Xbox one, myself included, so MS making smart delivery a thing and upgrading Gears 5 like they are is huge for the likes of me and if you already own gears 5 that update is absolutely free. Puts things into perspective here.
Also can’t wait to play gears tactics, it’s right up my alley!
@LiamCroft well, wasn't Don Mattrick to blame for the launch of the Xbox One?
@oldschool1987 Not single-handedly, no. People forget that Phil Spencer has been with Microsoft for decades, even becoming the vice president of Microsoft Studios in 2009.
Much like with Jim Ryan, it's so much more than just a single person calling all the shots.
Who cares? This website is so dramatic sometimes. If it's been a "disastrous week for Sony" I blinked and missed it.
@Danloaded yeah an alternate beginning would be much appreciated
@get2sammyb..... Well he is the guy in charge when things have been going ape s*** since hes been in charge......... Xbox isn't run alone but if it becomes successful who will we attribute that success to, Phil Spencer obviously even though there many people invoveld....... Same applies to Jim Ryan...... Man I so miss Shawn Lyden that guys is Playstation guy through and through and you always knew what's going on and where playstation is heading when he was around...... It's no coincidence that since he was replaced Playstation had had a zipper on its communication and Pr mouths.... So soryy Sammy and Liam but this is all on Jim Ryan.... He comes off as more of a corporate guy than a gaming playstation guy...... Going forward on the appointment at Playstation Jim Ryan should be the first to be released of his duties............. It's been a shambles since he took over and as a PS fan he makes me panic...... Only thing that keeps faith on the Ps5 is that Mark Cerny is still there... If it was only Jim Ryan then we would be having the PS3 situation all over again..............
@Th3solution the backlog is real. I've given up worrying about my Steam backlog.
My Steam Profile (from SteamDB)
For those saying people are being entitled for expecting or atleast hoping for a free upgrade then all I can say is this. If Microsoft, cdpr and other devs are giving updates to their titles then a little goodwill from Sony would be nice.
Package and lock the upgrade in with Miles Morales for free. Stick a one time code in the box so that if you have Spiderman ps4 then you get a free upgrade. That'll maybe pull in people who wouldn't have been interested in Miles' story and creates some good press with it.
For those defending Sony effectively charging 20 quid extra keep in mind that the upgraded content in the Spiderman game is going to be more or less the same content that's in Miles Morales.. taking out the story and cutscenes of course. It's the same city, traffic and NPC's for the most part. So the hard work being described is mostly content they've already created and used for Miles.
The extra effort that is being defended is largely copy and paste work from what's in Miles Morales. It's ridiculous imo that they are trying to slap a £20 price tag on it.
Most people are annoyed that this game was not offered as a upgrade (paid/free whatever) for people who allready own the game on PS4. The remaster is just useless now when the game is still new. It's the same game with better assets but is the same game , same engine , telling you that you can't shift you're saves is just ... Balls.
FYI for all. There is no "Boost Mode" on PS5. Cerny made it clear that it will have 3 modes of operation. PS5 and Legacy PS4 and PS4 Pro. The games will play exactly like they did on you're PS4. They will run better ONLY if developers will patch there games and remove framecaps. Even games with dynamic resolution or uncapped framerate will not change, cause the system will run in PS4 Pro Legacy Mode (the system will downclock to PS4 speeds)

Whilst I do see some irony in Nintendo recently getting (at best),only mild criticism from gaming sites & it's acolytes alike for an unremarkable Mario compilation with minimal updates & a timed limited release even digitally,they still bought it up & sing Ninty's praises regardless.
However, in the face of next-gen competition against XBSX,& the reaction of 505 doing a similar thing with Control,or CDPR & Witcher 3's free update, its bad optics.
Not to mention in a week that'd already seen potentially several IP's/Mega 3rd party publisher largely go presumably exclusive to XB, for Sony to remain silent on Twitter/Its Blog,about a simple upgrading Spiderman 2018 question & then respond in such a poorly communicated manner like this & bunker down in silence.
As has been pointed out-does this set a precedent for TLOU2 or GOT etc.? We don't know.
Indeed,we don't even know beyond Spiderman 2018 working via b/c mode what differences there'll be between it & the remaster, because Sony has failed to produce a teardown as promised of features like b/c & what a "boost" mode might entail for its own first party titles!
Jim Ryan might be a good business man-yes,we know Playstation did well in Europe. But the communication side of things via the blog declined prior to its ultimate merger,& despite promises by the likes of Sid Schumar,the lack of features at the new blog remain unchanged, & communications of even weekly releases,monthly sales etc.,have gotten worse/non-existent.
They are sorely lacking the communicative execs of old ala Adam Boyes,Andrew House,Jack Tretton,Shawn Layden etc.
Shuhei "Yosp" Yoshida is the exception on twitter,(backed up sometimes by Greg Rice formerly of Double Fine), though is more involved with indies these days & seems happier being a bit more in the background. Hermen Hulst doesn't seemed to have fully embraced being the public face of Playstation WWS,& it's clearly not Jim Ryan's forte.
They need a senior exec who is communicative socially/be their face of presentations,or a communications team directly in touch with Jim Ryan's group to respond quickly & if needed course correct & show they're listening.
@BAMozzy l honestly no I would play the games in my catalog that I already own. I don’t need a new coat of paint to make it seem better than it already is I wouldn’t buy the game again either it makes no sense. That is like buying Skyrim all over again like why we have played the game how many times from ps3 to ps4 and pc like haven’t plowed through the game and did everything that made it amazing accomplished everything that was there to accomplished. I could see if there is something new about the game new paint and graphics job that doesn’t change the game as a whole or add anything isn’t worth a repurchase or upgrade in my opinion especially if you didn’t play it.
I wasn't able to get a PS5 pre-order last week, but after this, I'm thinking that may not be a bad thing. I might wait a year or two to get a PS5. This is just stupid. I think I may just wait out while PlayStation gets their crap together.
I'm not too fussed about having to pay a bit extra for the remaster and the all the dlc and miles, obviously it would be nice to have a free upgrade but seeing as it's a few yrs old now then I'm ok with this. The most annoying thing is that it's not available as a standalone version. Still think Sony needs to start communicating a bit more now though, especially since we have date and pre orders available. I would expect little bits of info once a week from now on something to keep people happy.
Its got to do with two words...Jim...Ryan.
Gears 5 isn't a simple case of just bumping resolution and frame rate settings in a patch - its a full remaster. It took them two weeks to get the game running on a Series X and at Ultra settings, since then they have gone on to do a LOT of work optimising, adding in RT Global Illumination, better fog, better textures, better Particles etc.
That's a list you expect from a Remaster. It really shows the lack of knowledge amongst gamers as to how a game is made and what a 'remaster' tends to do. The base code is ported to the new generation and see how it runs before changing the lighting, upgrading the textures etc. Of course if the game is a couple of generations old, they may need to do more work, maybe even 'remake' a game (like Crash for example) over the OLD game which is used as a template.
For a game that's less than 5yrs Old, its not exactly going to be 'rebuilt' - especially not in a year or so whilst also making 2 games (Spider-Man: MM and R&C).
Again, not to say that they haven't done 'work' and therefore it should be charged - however, other developers too are doing work on their games to give 'FREE' updates instead of charging the customer who has ALREADY supported the developers by buying their game on current gen. MS 'could' release Gears 5, Forza Horizon etc as a Series X 'remaster' instead of letting customers install the 'new' version on their new console with New textures etc. You put the disc in (or access it from your 'digital' account, with Smart Delivery, it will download the 'version' suitable to your hardware - with that's the Xbox One version, Series S or Series X version...
Its not as if the Coalition haven't spent weeks, months etc to upgrade Gears 5 - no different from Insomniac - the difference is that one is trying to sell you the 'enhanced' version and the other isn't. I am NOT disputing that porting a game up and optimising it for next gen doesn't involve work, adding in new features, new lighting, new textures etc but the difference is that Sony are charging customers who already own the game, making them rebuy, where MS are not. Other publishers too are opting to upgrade the Loyal customers who already purchased a free upgrade and others are not...
We already know how 'bad' it made Control look and now Sony are doing the same too...
@LiamCroft I'm not disagreeing with you, my point is the blame landed at Don's feet, to the point he had to step down and Spencer took over.
I don't think he's entirely to blame, same as Jim Ryan, but no matter what, the captain of the ship will be remembered and blamed for it all, as unfair as that is.
talk about overreaction it comes with the new game anyway.
what has Jim Ryan done that is causing this outrage about him? Do you see the generation PS4 has just had the cool games we all just got this year? yet somehow we are moaning about things not normal.
Sony could have taken the foot of the gas with the diaster that MS have been this generation! did they no! some perspective maybe guys.
@louieverr Gamepass is going to be bad in the long term I fear tho...
@MidnightClubRacer2 it will blow up in MS faces soon only so long they will keep paying the losses it makes day in day out.
It’s like the tables have been flipped for next gen v’s the PS4/X1 launch. This gen Xbox couldn’t get anything right and Sony walked it, for next gen it feels Sony are falling at every hurdle while MS are cruising...
Heh, I think the price is right, but tge messaging is really muddled.
I think I would've handled it like this:
-PS4 gets Miles Morales as a standalone, just like Spiderman, but priced at 40€;
-PS5, instead, gets the bundle Spiderman Remastered + MM for 60€;
This way, if you already own Spiderman, you can save 20€ by just buying MM PS4; if you don't, you're catching two birds with one stone.
You guys realize that they had to upgrade the world and character models for the MM release right? Them being able to say it's a "remaster" is just a bonus for them. They are getting us to pay for their enginer upgrade basically.
They will be charging £15 to play Bloodborne at 60 FPS next 🙄
@Lonejester because other games are getting free updates.
@Get2thechoppa Don't forget the $1 per death fee lol
@Synthatron_Prime................ If you think CDPR are giving free upgrades of the W3 cause they are good guys then you are more naive than entitled.......CDPR have only 1 successfully game in their history and that is W3 and they saw that their Good guy PR stance has got them a lot of mileage with the fans and so they are milking it to death....
1. W3 is not necessarily a free upgrade on console cause on console it is a downgraded PC port, hence the free upgrade they are touting is just the PC port with the high details assets now available on console cause Ps5 can handle them so they are actually doing no extra on the upgrade hence they can afford give for free and look good while doing....
2. They have a game they have invested in haviley launching in less than 2 months and they saw how the bad press completely derailed the last of us part 2 sales moment... So they are completely milking their good guys PR status to the bone so that we buy the game by masses because they have the good guys reputation and also to make sure that any bad press that they come up as the games approaches launch gets shrugged under the carpet by the gaming community................ So stop making CDPR the gooey good guys of gaming cause they are just another company looking for profit....... Same reason No Mans Sky is the most free updated game of the generation (if not ever) because if Hello Games did not spend the whole generation not fixing their reputation they would be dead as no one would trust anything they release....... So after the shambles that was the launch of No Mans Sky we are more willing to give Hello game another chance because of the work they did not charge for all the upgrades of No Man's Sky......... So CDPR are playing the good guy rep tto the core...............
I think this would be fine if they offered it standalone. That's the real head scratcher for me. I think $20 for a remaster is pretty reasonable, and I think it comes with all the DLC, but it's really confusing to just have it bundled with another game and that's that.
This site is going nuclear once an editor finds out what the Xbox Twitter came up with regarding the whole claptrap.
@Agramonte....... You completely correct for all Sony's bad communication and Microsoft Good PR......... The PS5 is the most wanted gaming device its crazy..... 8 live in South Africa and the Ps5 is first Sony console to not be avaible in our country due to it being sold............... After the showcase of the price revile I try to pre-order one but all retailers are sold out........ This has never happened before with the Ps1, ps2, ps3 and Ps4....... It's just crazy I think it's the same reason Sony are pumping production to have 11 mil PS5 in the first 3 to 6 months of the console release even the Ps4 only sold about 6 mil units in its first 3 to 6 months of release........ I think it's also the reason Microsoft are intensifying the PR with the gamers and with the aggressive acquisitions they have made......... It's like whatever Microsoft tries they just cannot tie Sony's shoes when it comes to home console gaming...... Sony is really a beast when it comes to home console.......
@Sanquine
You know I have to agree. I didn't like Andrew House at first but Jim Ryan is a dangerous fit for leadership. He has to go.
@David187 That's what I'm saying man they are taking a loss putting their games on the service. To make the money back I expect hella micro-transactions in their 1st party games the quality will take a dip.
I'm not saying we should be entitled to a free upgrade per se but I see this simply as it was done just to sell an 'Ultimate Edition' of Miles Morales which is wrong and greedy.
Spider-Man doesn't need a remaster, the original is perfectly fine and plays on PS5 so why do it?
I do not support this decision.
People in these comments have an absurd amount of loyalty to a multi-billion dollar corporation that ultimately just wants your money and nothing else.
You can be a PlayStation fan and still criticize Sony, guys. You don't have to excuse their every blunder and/or moment of greed.
Happy to buy Miles Morales Ultimate Edition.
@theheadofabroom Nice! I can relate. Honestly, my allegiance to PlayStation as my sole console has less to do with console wars and fanboyism as much as it has to do with the lack of time to invest in the multiplication of a backlog across multiple platforms. That’s an impressive Steam account! A tally of just my PlayStation games alone is enough to keep me afloat for a few years; and they keep adding great titles! With PS5 on the horizon, I’m going to have a whole new source of backlog. 😄 I truly have interest in some of the content on Nintendo, Xbox, and PC but I only have time and energy for one ecosystem. Good luck with yours! Reckon you’ll be adding next gen consoles to your repertoire?
@KirbyTheVampire exactly. some people are unable to be objective and call out the bs even when the evidence is right in front of them. playstation under jim ryan is no longer the same playstation that was being run by tretton, hirai, house and layden during the ps3/ps4 era — not by a long shot. we are headed to ea and activison territory now and i wouldn't be surprised to see unnecessry dlc and mtx with first party games going forward because OBVIOUSLY the $10 price hike won't be enough to recoup their development costs...
@Th3solution already pre-ordered a PS5. Not had a console since the Wii, and my PC needs a new motherboard, CPU, RAM otherwise other upgrades would be useless, so I'm going to wait a couple of years to get something that will give decent performance in VR without breaking the bank.
@SilkySmile89 hi do you have a source for that? Not so I can argue but if the ps4 pro aspect is confirmed, would be great to see as I've looked for it before and couldn't see it! Makes a difference on whether ill hold off playing hzd frozen wilds now or after my ps5 drops.
Wow, you guys really don't know what you're on about, huh... 🤦♂️
@JapaneseSonic That's why they have to build such an extreme value around their machine. They have zero launch exclusives and they haven't been able to compete in 5 years with Sony on that specific front.
@Skuggs23 I think if you took what Microsoft is doing out of the equation then nobody would be knocking Sony's approach. I love the added PlayStation Plus library of games you get when you buy a PS5. That's a great idea. Microsoft has a remarkable value proposition right now that is hard for a lot of people to pass up. Sure they are missing exclusives but a lot of people just play Multiplatform games anyways. One of my close friends ditched the PS for a XSX because MLB the Show was going Multiplatform. That was the only thing holding him back from switching. He loves the game pass model. I don't think that model is sustainable while keeping the quality of games high. I am still in Sony's camp because I love their exclusives and i want to do VR next gen. I still think their is a market for their approach but they will lose customers this gen.
@LiamCroft @GADG3Tx87 @get2sammyb Well, i think the whole thing of we believe of generations was the first thing that annoyed me. In addition, the demon souls and FF whatever exclusively. People thought that demons souls was timed. If they just did their homework this would not have happend. Moreover, sony is just not reading the room regarding exclusives---> we need them more than ever as gamepass will destroy third party sales on PS5. Instead of publishing exclusives on PC they need to maintain PS exclusivity. Look at Menchi on this very website. The pc edition of horizon will not make Jim buy a PS5 as he will just wait for the eventual release.
I will also Blame the Dutch guy from killzone. Forgot his name but where is he?
i don't think this shows sony is "out of touch". i think it shows how cheap, spoiled and entitled people seem to be about so many things in life (not just gaming) in todays world. you don't want to buy - don't buy. you don't think the ps5 is a good purhchase or that MS is more consumer friendly - buy an xbox. but all of this whining and crying from some gamers when they have to pay for something is ridiculous.
@wiiware - i LOVED the LoU2......amazing game. that being said, your idea that it's all a dream ? that would be a real mindf#ck if it did happen.- clever idea.
@GamingVeteran - you are SO right. a lot of gamers are SO cheap and seem to think everything should be free.
We do not need remasters of any games released on PS4/Xbox One. This is just getting ridiculous. Hollywood refuses to take chances anymore and just remakes everything, is the same happening with the gaming industry?
@JapaneseSonic
I totally agree. All the other games getting "free upgrades" aren't really getting upgrades at all. They are simply being made to run as they are on PS5. Very little work going into them. As a side effect of being on a system multiple times more powerful than PS4, they might run at higher framerates or resolutions. But that's not taking much if any work on the developer's part to accomplish. For Spider-Man (and to an extent, Control) they are reworking a lot of the graphical elements and introducing new effects. They are actually putting effort into this. I wouldn't expect that to come for free on a 2 year old game. The most that I'll accuse them of is not releasing the first game as a standalone remastered title. But chances are, if you REALLY want to play through that game remastered, you probably haven't played it at all yet and you'll want the whole package including Miles anyway. Also I bet after 6 months they do release it standalone. But overall, there's nothing wrong with how Sony is handling this. Nobody complained about GTA V hopping from PS3 to PS4 and asking full price... And the improvements there were not as drastic as they potentially are here.
Sony has been out of touch since PS5 become a thing... From porting your brand games to other platform to copystrike people on YT for not like your propaganda game.
Every single bad new for next-gen has something to do with Sony. MS is making Sony looks like a awful company and Sony seems to just ignore it.
It's like the PS3 era again.
If the only change is that the game looks better and they've not added for instance additional story content then I think it should be a free upgrade.
This is something that Microsoft seem to be doing right. Buy a game once, play it anywhere in the best version available.
On its own it’s a poor show, a bit cheap, but not the end of the world. It just looks bad next to Xbox but Nintendo don’t offer free upgrades (or free anything). The issue is that hopefully it isn’t a sign of an incoming dose of the Corporate Arrogance that affects every platform holder when they’re on top.
@AyanamiReign
It’s not just Microsoft, it’s something the PC Community has taken for granted for years. It would be nice to see it come to the Console Space either but a lot of Console Gamers seem to be stuck on ‘how things have always been done’ and not how things can change.
I will buy the ultimate. worth my money and in 60FPS.
@get2sammyb - i'm not trying to offend, but i read your article. it sounds like you've already lost your mind. i don't have a problem with ANY company that wants to charge for an upgrade. and adding spiderman to MM for 20 dollars seems ok to me. i was going to preorder MM - now i'm getting the version with ps4 spiderman.
The important optics with the new console launch is having a good selection of new console-specific launch titles. Offering the original Spider-Man as a standalone would look like they are re-selling an updated version. And then would you like it if they sold Miles Morales as a separate game from that? And offering a PS5 upgrade for PS4 Spider-Man users will promote the idea that the ps5 spider-man is just an update.
Maybe Morales will have some expansions and they can release a complete edition later but selling miles morales as a new Spider-Man game is key for the launch.
@KathyQ they obviously spend too much time in bars ordering shots. ‘Optics’ must be in their subconscious!
@BAMozzy - CDPR is upgrading ONE game. but you equate that to wanting sony to upgrade ALL of their exclusives for free?
@suikoden I think its entitled gamers to be fair. If they didn't do a remaster at all would we be at Sony's door angry with pitchforks calling for an improved version. Nobody is forcing gamers to pay for the new spiderman just play the ps4 version on the ps5 with improved frames and resolution.
On what planet is asking for money for a remaster any form of arrogance?
I am guessing some people who bought mass effect games on ps3 will feel entitled to the remastered trilogy for free on ps4 then?
"You know you’ve done goofed". I remember when this was a British website. Happy days.
People seem to be missing the MASSIVE elephant in the room here. Xbox is desperate... it got trounced last gen and they need to be as consumer friendly as possible to win back gamers. Hence the game pass, hence the smart delivery. Do you really think that if Xbox was in the same position as Playstation are right now that there would be anything like a 14:99 a month all you can eat gamepass?. And them buying Bethesda just shows the desperation clear as day to me
I hear rumours about Xbox buying sega next. This is not going to end well at all. Sony just need to keep doing what they’re doing IMO, and that is hiring great studios to make great games not buying out established multi-plat developers and robbing the rest of the gaming community of the chance of continuing series we’ve been playing for the best part of two decades. Abysmal behaviour from MS. I mean imagine is Sony brought rockstar, it would just be wrong
$ony is doing this simply because they know the shills will line up and pay them. Xbox starting to look like a better choice for the upcoming generation with the gamepass combined with EA play.
@Spooder the gamepass is due to desperation and nothing else
@Mikey856 I've red your comments and you sound pretty much as a $ony shill(no offense). I don't like being ripped off by paying more for games, paying extra for "upgrades" and paying for a subscription that literally gives me nothing that I don't have already. Micro$oft are playing smart and being more consumer friendly is huge plus for them. The list of games that are available on the game pass is huge and have something for everyone. The EA play is just a bonus. However, $ony just gives people crumbs at pretty high price.
@Spooder no it’s the fact Sony can shift millions of copies of a game and Xbox can’t. Think you need to get your facts right duckie. It’s a well used business strategy called carrot and stick
@Spooder il go back to my original point and make it clearer for you.. If MS had sold 100 million Xbox ones you can bet your left leg there would be no gamepass
@Mikey856 the only fact here is your ignorance. You don't have a slightest clue what kind of company Microsoft are and how big they actually are. Obtaining Bethesda was a very smart move. However, I am not going to bother and go down that path with you. As they say, ignorance is bliss. Have a nice day.
@Spooder hahaha Christ okay then. I’ve only been gaming for 31 years but yeah whatever flower
@Mikey856 facts don't care about your 31 years of gaming. If you stop shilling for one minute, you will see it. Ok? Ok. And please, be a gent and stop @ me.
@Mikey856
That’s where competition is great for the Consumer. Sony fell into the Corporate Arrogance trap after PS1 and PS2, they were awful at the start of the PS3 gen. Then they had to rethink when they had the rug pulled from under them and became all consumer friendly. Microsoft had a disastrous first few years of XB1 and are now looking for another way to pick up Customers and Revenue, undercutting Sony in lots of ways.
Nothing wrong with that, Consumers can benefit from Companies deciding they need to be Consumer Friendly (whatever the motivation). If they chose to stick to one ‘side’ that’s being less so, that’s their call.
They are doing a remedy/505 games. Just another way to milk dry PlayStation gamers Of all their money now they have you in their ecosystem, this is going to be the new norm for a arrogant, greedy Sony going forward. What have they done that benefits gamers? Full Backwards compatibility? Noop, free PS4 to ps5 upgrades? Noop, good exclusive first party games yes! caveat *you have to pay us €80 for the pleasure (40% price hike)
Whinge, whinge, whinge. Moan, Moan, Moan, Whinge, Whinge, Whinge, Moan, Moan, Moan. That's modern gamers in a nutsell.
So I get to play the PS4 game I own on my PS5 for free but if I want to upgrade the graphics I have to pay - seems fair to me. It will have cost the games company money to develop the upgrade.
It is a bit like ordering a steak which comes with fries and peas. You then order the side dishes and expect them for free as you have already paid for the steak dish.
It is not only games companies that are getting greedy.
@Spooder got a series x ordered and a ps5. Won’t be buying any PS4 to ps5 updates or new games at €80 each.
My ps5 will see only used games from day 1, I don’t like being ripped off!!
The series x will be my main console with gamepass.
@Spooder stop shilling ? I said it would be wrong for Sony to say, buy rockstar. So how am I shilling? . I’m making the point that MS are not doing gamepass out of the goodness of their hearts... there doing it because Xbox is on its arse . Lol
@john_c it’s called being entitled. kids these days no nothing less. It’s embarrassing
I want everyhting and I want it for next to nothing. Sod the developers who’s livelihoods depend on these game selling for a decent price because I want a Netflix for gaming. Get a grip .
The PS4 launch was flawless when it came down to simplifying and having all the information out there for customers. This time round it's certainly been messy. They certainly need to get their act together!
I honestly don't have a problem with this and I find the effort to paint the upgrade system as hilarious.
Guess I'm a shill because I comprehend what I read.
@BusyOlf are you aware we’re in the middle of a pandemic ? To be honest I’m surprised the consoles are even being released this year. I think both companies deserve a pat on the back
@eddie429 CDPR are upgrading 2 games - the Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. You do not have to rebuy either of these games and I know Cyberpunk hasn't released yet, but there isn't a PS5/Series S/X release so its still being upgraded for FREE.
The Witcher 3 is more than 5 years old and that too is being upgraded for Free. There is NO reason Sony couldn't do the same for their 'big' exclusives over the last few years.
Its a benefit to those who have bought the game and supported the developers, the platform etc and no doubt will see a resurgence of sales from newcomers to the platform and those who haven't yet bought these titles. Its not 'just' rewarding those who have already supported the game, its not punishing them either by asking fans for yet more money to play an enhanced version on a new platform.
Many other developers are offering free updates on old games - as well as free upgrades on 'new' releases too. The new releases could very well have a PS4 and then a PS5 release - like we saw at the start of this generation. If you bought CoD, BF4, ACiv etc on PS3/360, you had to rebuy those games on PS4/XB1 to play them. I know some still are offering 'different' versions that will/won't be upgraded but a LOT are...
The very idea of trying to "remaster" a 2 year old game sets the mood on this. Adding upgrades, features, patches is one thing. But "remasters" are for when the assets are so old they need to be remade to look presentable on current hardware. A 2 year old game can't be "remastered." The very idea is spin. To say a 2 year old game deserves a "remaster" for a single generational hardware upgrade is to say the game released substandard 2 years ago. I don't believe anyone has accused Insomniac of anything of the sort with this game. So it's either some enhancements painted as a "remaster", or something is really wrong here.
They're trotting out an outdated business model of "generational upgrade rereleases" after that era ended. Sony itself and some Sony-only customers seem to not realize that model is outdated. As Sammy said in the article, (and I can't believe I find myself agreeing with Sammy on a regular basis now!), they are out of touch. The market at large decided years ago that this is not the model going forward, and the industry wanted to move consoles in line with PC releases and the sales model they have in that market of one game to continue selling with improvements for as long as they want to keep the game up to current standards for continued sales. But Sony's still trying to operate as though the old model is standard, while their partners are rolling out the upgrades all around them. Spider-Man is a great game, and they should keep selling Spider-Man. If they want to add upgrades to Spider-Man to make it really shine on their latest hardware, that's great! If not, then they should let it stand on its own as released. Trying to sell the enhancements of an already new game as a "new version" of the game is a business practice the industry abandoned some years ago, while Sony wasn't paying attention to the industry, as they didn't understand why the industry demanded the PS4 should be x86 a decade ago. They put the x86 architecture in but clearly didn't understand the direction the industry was moving when they did so. They're trying to go status quo and roll back to the late PS3 era.
And if this is a one time deal, Sony really needed to have said so. Who would actually buy GoT, Death Stranding, or TLoU2 now, after this news, if you didn't already and plan on getting PS5? Or any other PS4 game. You'll either be getting it in Plus or you'll be getting it re-sold to you as a new game on PS5. Or both.
@JapaneseSonic honestly. I bought the game and I'm willing to pay £70 for miles morales and the remaster 🤷🏾♂️
Can't blame them for wanting to charge money for a REMASTER
@Mikey856 Yes thanks, i'm also aware that their planning in the communication area of this launch has been poor and that can be rectified by better planning. It's been sloppy work and a prime example of this is the Demon Souls showing last week when PC/xBox gamers were getting excited about finally being able to play Demon Souls and others were getting angry because they might lose a first party exclusive. It's those kind of mistake that people are picking up on more, something that wasn't as prevalent with Andrew House at the helm.
@BusyOlf well I have to disagree. The only thing that I haven’t understood in this whole saga was the ps plus collection during the last stream. Everything else I’ve understood perfectly well.
mistakes:
-not showing it
-not having answers from day 1 announcement for basic questions
-save files not transferring
-no standalone purchase or paid upgrade option
charging is fine for most people, yes it “looks cheap” next to MS’s choices but clarity could have made up for it. Keep it simple Sony.
It's dissapointing but fair enough as well. The game is a few years old now but it would have been better if they showed a side by side comparison and state it's a paid remaster upfront at the beginning of it all.
It would also be better if the industry just had one practice. Free upgrade or paid for upgrades, instead of different companies providing free upgrades and others charging. CDPR is throwing gasoline on the fire when they announced a free upgrade of The Witcher 3, considering it's age.
I already own a 4k Sony TV and was hoping that they'd give me a free upgrade to a new 8k TV but it turns out that they expect me to to pay several thousand pounds to upgrade to 8k. They are so anti-consumer!
I already paid for the old TV so why can't they give me the new one for free?
Remastering Spider-Man costs them money. Why does anyone expect to get it for nothing?
How many of you would bother getting out of bed to work for no pay?
People arent expecting it for nothing. They are wondering why a remaster is needed in the first place when a bit of tinkering here and there would do as a free upgrade option. It's not an old game. They won't be building the engine from scratch for PS5 as we know MM is going to be on PS4 as well as PS5. So how could it be really a remaster of a game that theoretically could be done on PS4, but isnt. It's already a PS4 game. It's just Sony saying "Spiderman is popular, how can we greedily milk this?" Really bad decision making. Id also prefer the time and money put into this remaster disaster be put into something new and different from Insomniac.
Sorry but media just makes Sony the bad guy all the time.
I'm not confident with how Sony is handling their marketing of this game. I don't have any issues with the Remastered version but their lack of connection with their consumers is what leads to this disaster. Even their last PS5 presentation was a bit of a mess due to misleading information about exclusivity.
Jim Ryan is doing such a poor job at delivering statements as well, with that "We believe in the next generation of consoles" crap. He's becoming similar to Phil Spencer (Or even worse). I miss Andrew House and Jack Tretton as they made the PS4 a power that it is now. I love the Playstation brand but I'm disappointed with the current events surrounding it.
To be honest I could care less Spiderman or the last of us 2. As for ghost of tsushima
I'll buy it again for ps5 and ps6 and ps7. My point is there are people who like/love a a game enough to to pay full price over and over. Much like I did with skyrim xbox360 ps3 ps4 and p.c then bought the remasyers too.
@Ashina Except, he didn't lie. They still have games being made for the PS5 only, designed around it. We all just kind of assumed which ones were which.
@TheAdza You might have a point if they actually WERE selling it separately and didn't allow BC with the previous game. It's being presented as an optional add-on with enhanced features taking advantage of the new console. And I'd love to know how the haptics, raytracing, the new character models, the new physics, enhanced city, etc. are somehow doable on the PS4? I mean, you do realize, as they've articulated many times, that MM on PS5 is also not the same as MM on PS4? It's not going to have the same new models, the faster load times, the more vibrant, living NYC, etc.
@get2sammyb isn't spiderman still a Sony property?
Play has no limits? More like ‘Pay has no limits’.
Amazon unveiling Luna today cements how insulated Sony has become. Ms said years ago their competitors aren't Sony and Nintendo, but Amazon and Google. Amazon didn't have a gaming service then, but we all knew they would and now they do. Ubisoft is onboard. Yves said before last e3 the future is 100% steamed. 2k stopped short of saying the same. And we can bet the corporate buyouts of companies are just getting warmed up.
One thing a lot of ps fans get wrong is that ms is the enemy, and that game pass is Microsoft's evil subscription model to end purchased games. But it's the opposite. PlayStation needs Xbox, at at least Spencer's version of it. And his Xbox needs PlayStation. Microsoft, with Phil running it with an interest in traditional gaming is the last line of defense between the Amazon/Google/Facebook/att/Comcast vision of gaming as a subscriber service and traditional Nintendo/Sega/PlayStation idea of gaming, having a foot in both worlds and trying to bridge then. Game pass is a revolving rental/sampler with 1st party as a loss leader. The traditional model matters to ms as much as Sony. Not because if console but because of PC. Which is why they started Xbox to begin with. Ps2 was eroding Dev support of DirectX (thus Project DirectX Box...) Games sell pcs, and pc sales sell Windows. They need non streamed gaming to survive for pc.
But this is where Sony falls deaf to the market. While Big Data is going to come in offering cheap cheap cheap entry into the games, and Microsoft is bridging cheap subs with status quo gaming, Sony's trying to maximize margin and raise barriers to entry and start nickel and diming every sale. While those companies are going to offer loss leading "almost free" introductory pricing, Sony's going to remind you they don't want to show a quarterly loss on a tentpole and it's your role to cover their opex. Ms bought zenimax for 7.5b and will give the product away for minimal fees just to have incentives to get you to spend elsewhere in the ecosystem. Sony will take an extra 10 on every sale, and monetize updates to ensure optimized roi. It's as though they are unaware if the massive paradigm shift in the market right now and are still fighting Sega and Nintendo rather than adapting to the market and competing for goodwill. If they keep this up they're going to have to find away to do what Nintendo did and move into their own niche and outside the rat race.
Premium pricing isn't what is going to bring success this generation. Value perception is. And sony moved from the top of that list in 2013 to last place in 2020. And the wounds are 100% self inflicted. They need more than a blog before Amazons holiday advertising starts bundling prime, Kindle fire, Alexa, and Luna starts spamming air waves.
@DigiTM cdpr also owns GOG that sells games drm free. Throwing gasoline on the fire to improve industry practice is a principal part of their business. If they had Amazon level scale, drm would be a thing of the past like for music.
@NEStalgia A well written and thought-out post, but I believe that as long as Sony continues to make great games and promote them effectively, they will be just fine (as will Nintendo); in fact, I encourage them to continue to use a model that reflects the value of their games as a high end product in the market. As an analogy, you can have Prada or you can have Gap. If Sony ends up being more "niche", as you put it, so be it.
@MidnightDragonDX Agreed, but change "gamers" to "the majority of people".
@ShadowWolf712 of course i know that. But it shows its basically the same engine with everything set to max. Insomniac have been playing around with the engine running on PS5 devkits for ages. Which is why im finding it a really hard sell as a remaster, when i would be more wowed by a new IP using the engine they have been working to wow us, not a remaster of a relatively new game. Even DLC for MM would have gone over better. Or better yet, new paid DLC for the original Spiderman game that gave access to the "remaster" with new stories to tell for Peter Parker. Sony are misfiring, and not reading the room. I wish it wasn't this way, but it sure seems like it is.
What I’m really waiting for is the RDR2 PS5 remaster with RDR1 bundled as DLC
Been out of touch since that fool Kenichiro Yoshida took over and did dumb stuff like give Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst control of the PlayStation division.
@MidnightDragonDX @doctommaso
😆 Wanting better value for your money as a Consumer is not ‘being entitled’
All of this confusion and debate about what you should get for free, what you should pay for and what we're heading into next gen is caused by Sony's awful messaging and PR. I don't know what's going on at Sony HQ this year but you can sense things are changing behind the scenes from a corporate perspective and it's not for the better.
@electrolite77 Up to a point, you are right. Many people have crossed that line, though.
Fake outrage, gotta love it, don't like it, don't buy it.
Its a Remaster, pay up or just play your old copy of spiderman with the basic enhancements you will get with PS5.
Wah wah wah, it should be free, this company did it so should sony, blah blah blah
@doctommaso Thanks! It's possible you're right. It's possible Sony is intentionally trying to present themselves as the premium luxury product in this space instead of directly competing. Maybe that will be their niche. That would be classic Sony. They've often positioned themselves as the premium luxury product in the market in the electronics industry. Though, at the same time, that's rarely, if ever, worked out well for them. We all know Playstation is one of the most profitable components of Sony Corp. It's not profitable because it's been the premium luxury product. It's been profitable because it's always been the lowest cost entry to market (Except PS3, that was a sales disaster until they brought costs down. And except Vita.)
Personally, I don't think that's a sustainable niche, if that's their actual goal. Prada can be Prada because they charge outrageous sums of money on items that, in all honestly, cost next to nothing to make. They don't need a very large market at all, because they're selling cheap to produce goods at thousands of percent of margin. And they can do that because fashion is an industry based on selling status and little else.
I mean, I can't talk, I'm #teamNintendo first and foremost, and nobody has mastered premium pricing like them, without ever running game sales. I'm sure HzD2 will be 24.99 regularly by 2022, and I'm sure Xenoblade 2 will still be 59.99.... But Nintendo makes cheap hardware to pull the mass market in and sells decent numbers to a large market for games made on thin budgets. Sony's budgets are astronomical. They need a much larger market to sell to. And they've always had that market by being both the value & price leader. This time they find themselves as neither the value, nor the price leader. But they can't afford to shrink their niche to only a luxury market unless they start charging way more than $70 a pop.
I don't think Playstation can become the Neo Geo of the 21st century, selling exotic "rich boys toys" to a small niche. That was little more than a promo item - SNK/NEC were already making the boards and carts for the commercial arcade market. They just repackaged them for consumers - it didn't cost much. Playstation needs to recoup $100+M budgets on these games they want to make. They can't squeeze in a few mil per game like Nintendo can. They've set expectations now. That either needs a large market or Prada-like margins.
(contd.)
Though, I also don't think they're trying to place themselves as premium right now. It looks that way through their hamfisted blundering, currently, but they don't give any impression that's the actual goal. If they were they wouldn't have done "Project Nimble" and waited for MS pricing to set theirs, while chasing the $399.99 entry, and re-entered the PC market. I think the game pricing has more to do with caving to what Activision, EA, and 2k have been whispering in their ear.
And when a strategy is a union of trying to chase the mass market while also premium pricing, and with Spiderman, presenting an image of nickel and diming, that's a losing strategy. That would be a blunder in a normal year. But they're doing it at the wrong time, while big tech (and I don't mean MS) is finally making their move into gaming. No premium "arthouse" platform could endure the assault of GoogAzonBook and DisCast&T and their low, low introductory prices. Sony needs to think big, not think petty right now. But Sony has never been great at doing that. And Jim Ryan is not a big thinker. He's a quarterlies guy. It's the wrong leadership direction at the wrong time.
This was a bad call on Sony's part. I wonder how much of it was influenced by Disney.
Oh no, you can only play the PS4 version on the PS5? And you'll have to wait a year and a half before you can pick up the PS5 version for next to nothing on a holiday sale? How terrible for us!
The owner of a Wii U and Switch.
@suikoden
Yet they still pulled out with sales despite xbox briefly having the illusion of an advantage lol.
@JapaneseSonic 2 years is not old. Spider-Man is not an old game. I'm playing Dragon Age Inquisition right now, and that's a 6 year old game, which is obviously an old game. And it is worrisome that it will be yet another generation for Sony of releasing a bunch of remasters you have to pay for all over again when Xbox is offering them for free. I had no problem with some of them during this current generation because I didn't already own those games.
A lot of the Xbox One X enhancements on old games would easily be considered remasters, like the original Assassin's Creed that now looks like a modern game, that were released as a free patch. Gears 5 is getting pretty extensive enhancements for free. What would have saved them from any of the backlash would have been to offer the remaster for free to current owners and then new owners pay $20 for the remastered game on PS5. Also, not releasing it standalone at all is a bad look as well when there's no reason for it other than just to force people to buy Miles Morales even if they just want the remastered version of the original.
@Darylb88 if its $20 more in the US then in Scotland and UK its £10 more tbh I don't mine paying . whatever the price
@NEStalgia amazon Luna isn't even a threat yet its Not even out worldwide just for Americans like typical companies Sony did same with Ps Vue was exclusive to America yet middle finger to rest of the world
@suikoden Arrogance cost Nintendo back in the day when they refused to change their business model during the PS1 and Sega Saturn days. Nintendo went with the cart based N64 and they have never fully recovered and a few years on Microsoft joined the fray.
@Falkirk4life its a trial balloon. Google, Amazon, apple etc will expand all at once when they expand. Vue is different... The contracts with tv rights holders are a massive pita. Telecoms will get into it too. But different ones in different companies counties. SoftBank and Tencent will have a big world presence. Each one company doesn't present the biggest threat to Sony. It's the changing business model and range of cheaper competition combined that does. They're doubling down in their dinosaur status with their pricing.
For now is just the us, but the us is the biggest market for their industry. They can't just thrive on losing in the us and uk and going for the win by carrying estonia and congo as the only player in town... What happens here affects Sony's position everywhere and their ability to invest the mammoth sums of money required for the games people not expect from them. Amazons still a thereat even before it goes worldwide. If nothing else, if Sony is priced out in the mega markets by big data, and big data ignores many smaller markets (they want your sellable info above all else, and small markets into doesn't matter to them) then that may leave no options beyond Sony becoming outrageously more expensive and "for the elite" in those places, or more pc adoption as in Russia and China.
The battle setting up is probably more about late ps5, early ps6 than it is about launch ps5. But what happens now and how Sony deals with things today will have a big effect on what happens then.
@rockman29 yeah all those consumers that bought launch ps4 should have been supporting Matricks xbox one. They don't know how these business work. It may have seemed like it was in their own best interest to condemn that terrible policy but maybe that was the right policy and everyone should have embraced it! Darn consumers telling companies what they want for their money. Before you know it they're will be competition, and some other company will offer what people want. Madness... Should be outlawed, i say!
@JapaneseSonic more than likely CDR already has those textures in the PC version where as Spiderman is a different story
I am always confused by this. Why do people think they should infinitely get free upgrades to a game no matter how much extra money and work were put into it? Hey Honda I bought an accord in 2016 can I get my free upgrade to the 2020 model? It makes no sense. Just because Microsoft got destroyed last gen now they have to play catch up by giving games and upgrades away free to ingratiate themselves with gamers. Same with gamepass. The only thing I think to gripe about is not bring able to buy it stand alone or a physical edition. Other than that I think Sony doing it on a case by case basis is correct whike allowing third party companies to do the same. I should note that unsurprisingly Sammy is crapping on Sony again. No magnanimity here. You should really consider changing to an xbox or switch site as it appears you constantly complain about Sony.
I know it sounds like a lot of work has gone into it, but looking around at other releases and upgrades that are free, it really isn’t anything special! Some Xbox releases are getting substantial free upgrades, Cyberpunk and the Witcher will be getting them, many cross gen games are also getting upgrades very close in calibre to this.
I just think this is poor across the board from Sony. And when they announce the paid remasters for TLOU 2 etc, there will be uproar. The reason I’m assuming there’ll be paid upgrades is due to this Spiderman release. These upgrades are what we expect from games being patched for a next gen. Sonys set a precedent with this, if they don’t stay consistent more questions will be asked of this Spiderman release.
@NEStalgia You make some fine points. I can't say I disagree, especially re: Jim Ryan — he seems entirely overmatched. I do think Sony is being reactionary to market trends and is setting up to be more of a higher end platform in terms of its first party/published games — while being willing to take a loss on hardware to get in the door and sell more games and subscriptions. As you mention, with such high development costs, Sony can't afford big losses. I think the goal is ultimately to land mostly digital sales of what is billed as a superior product line (and, let's face it, up to this point, Sony has delivered on that front) and to control prices much more tightly this generation, as Nintendo has always done. Of note, Microsoft suddenly acquiring a potential boatload of exclusives via ZeniMax may have put a huge dent in things. Ultimately, I suspect Sony has watched Microsoft devalue games with the Game Pass platform, calculated it's simply not financially sustainable, and decided that the approach outlined above may be the only option. In any case, Microsoft seems to be putting Sony in a tough spot this generation!
@doctommaso
True. Fair point.
@TheAdza You sure about that? 👀
@ShadowWolf712 Until there was more information i was totally sure about that.
